Well... I started the post, so I'm going to double post, because I want to talk about Mort. This movie... so many levels of it... Mort is such a unique character, and everytime I watch it, it takes me back to the first time, and all I can think now is "How could I not see what was going on the whole time?" I love Mort.... he's just... wow.

I am a therapist, and I didn't see it coming either, for gawdssake. And I even KNEW Stephen King had written a book like that.
My gawd... I was confused for a while, fearing I had lost my touch ... Untill I understood that Johnny probably digged himself into the matter of psycho's for this role ...and exactly understood the most important thing about them. He nailed down your typical psychopath (antisocial personality disorder) like no one did before, methinks. Charming, disarming ---- and not at all alarming.
Psycho's are liars... they dish up any story people want to hear, they act in whatever way that will make them popular. They alterate their stories, just when they think it suits them better to do so. They can butter you up like no one else. Psycho's therefore appear as very charming. They wear the mask of sanity brilliantly.
And their victims have only this one story ...the truth. A truth many people do not want to hear anymore. This sweet, charming, lovely, witty guy, who is pumping up our affection and motherinstincts with his helplessness - NOT a sweet guy? Noooo - can't be - what an awful thing to say ... And so we emotionally invest in Mort-the-psychopath like mad. Oh what a sweetie, what a cutie! Bad Amy ... unfaithful woman! Stupid Ted ... dull rubbernecker!
Welcome to the works of your typical socialized psychopath, the most dangerous kind of all psychopaths. And when it happens ...and it happens a lot, because half of the psychopaths will go into some kind of violence during their lives .... we say... "Really? Him? You're kidding? He has always been such a nice guy ...loved dogs ....friendly to his neighbours .... "
Darling, sweet Morty .... yeah. Johnny <-> Merlot: 1 to 0.

Oh, and for that brilliant scene at the barn door, with the "Shoot Her" .... credits go to King, Koepp and Depp, all three of them. Exactly at the point when psychopaths are (at risk of) being held accountable, being demasked .....they attack.
Completely correct. Because their web of lies is their survival strategy. They can and will not allow it to be torn.

^Hahaha merlot.
Yeah, this whole movie I felt soooo bad for Mort and then it got to the end and he puts on the hat at the end and I thought out loud..."Oh sh*t." (which warrented a painful slap on the leg by my mum )
I couldn't believe it!! Looking back now I see the clues but the first time was shocking. lol Then when Amy pulls up I thought, "Runaway!" But when she got in the house I went "Eh, shoot her." LOL

Tried to resize it on photobucket but when I'd put the new code in it stayed the same size. LOL So, I just took it off. People know where I was talking about anyways. Sorry 'bout that!

I love Morty . And I love how you just love Mortypie utterly and then, eventually, you realise he's craaaazyyyyyy and is killing everyone and Morty is indeed very scary... and yet, instead of thinking "OH NO! MORTYPIE IS GOING TO KILL YOU EVERYONE!!! RUN!! RUN AWAY FAST!!!" You're still kinda like Awww, Mortypie I still love you - except (!!) that you killed poor darling Chico. I mean, all these people, burning houses to the ground and fertilizing your corn with your corpses all doesn't seem so bad as killing poor wee Chico! How could Morty do such a terrible thing?! . Though I do find Morty especially creepy when he cleans himself up, gets his braces, becomes all confident and starts boiling his pans of corn. Then I'm like woah - I would steer clear of you now methinks! Also, I didn't guess the twist either when I first saw it at the cinema. Is it that obvious? I think it's only obvious because it apparently happens often in films, but I guess I'd never seen any other film like that then in which case it doesn't seem obvious to me. Well in retrospect of course it is, but still.

it's because they mad ehim so entirely sympathetic through the whole movie.
I mean it starts off with his wife cheating on him, he's going through writer's block (I hate that so much lol), accused of plagerism, dog dies, house burns down, has to deal with Ted...I mean it goes on and on.
You feel for him so much that you WANT him to exact his revenge on the others because they are the ones that drove him to this point. So, first instinct is, "No, don't kill them." Then you think about all the crap they put him through and you're like, "On second thought, go for it!!" Lol
It's kinda like reverse psychology.
