My turn to criticise one. The Man Who Cried is the only film where I feel Johnny is mainly just there to look pretty. I think he only really has to act in one scene pretty much as I recall. I don't think we ever get enough of a sense of who Cesar is. It makes me sad. Although he does do a great job of looking pretty :giggle:

I've had this one on my shelf for a while, just watched it this morning. Johnny is very good at giving sultry looks! It's kind of a sad movie, I thought Cate Blanchett was absolutely great and I liked seeing John Turturro in this one. I also loved the music! And Johnny is at his sexiest. Even better than Chocolat.
*SPOILER COMING*
But I feel bad that we don't know what happens to Cesar, and he does have very few lines. Although we know from Edward Scissorhands that he doesn't need lines to convey emotions well. I thought they should have spent some more time on Suzie - Cesar's relationshipas opposed to Cate and John's'.

I agree. I wish they would have done more with Cesar and Suzie. They are beautiful together. I want a sequel.

It's worth watching the whole movie just for the scene where he and his horse walk Susie home. It's that bit at the door where he reaches out to touch her face and she pulls away, and he makes the horse bow and then rides away. About 20 different thoughts cross his face and he never has to say a word. Bloody brilliant.
~spoiler~ I *think* we're meant to assume that Cesar and his clan are swept up in the Nazi push through Paris (though it's not stated of course). A lot of gypsies ended up in concentration camps with all the other "undesirables," which makes her leaving him behind even more horrifying--we know what's coming but they don't.

| Agree; no doubt that is the idea.
I't's a technique that's used a lot in European films about WWII or the nazi's. What is going to happen is not said in so much words, but the spectator knows only too well.

Yup, that I got. And often, that which is not explicitly shown has more impact. Also, the last scene with Johnny, pretending he's asleep, is pretty grasping so I don't know if it would have made the movie better in some way. But somehow it feels weird to care about a character and then leave him when Suzie leaves. Maybe if they had shown 'flashes' from what happens to the gypsies in between the scene that

the bomb falls on the ship and Suzie is in the water. But oh well, I'm not a writer nor a director so I'll shut up
