It took me a while to find this one.

After seeing it, I was impressed. And quiet.
Couldn't let it go in my mind, I just kept thinking what would have happened to him after he entered the building and the thought of it made me sick.
I did not see it for a second time. Yet. But I know I will see this one again.

I love The Brave . It is flawed in my opinion but I agree Charlotta - it really makes me think and is one that sticks with me afterwards. I think you have to be in a certain mood to watch it partly because it is sad and also because there isn't that much dialogue and the pace is a languid one so you have to properly watch. But when I do watch it it always moves me in a deep down way not just a surfacy one. And it's not always the same point that gets me. I think it's one of the most moving of his films, and also an important one. I respect Johnny for making it and think it comes across that it means something to him. I also feel Johnny is great at conveying what Rafael is feeling and thinking without having to say anything at all and think this film is a good example of the skill Johnny has at conveying a character's internal world in this way.

I read the book of it recently-ish too. Anyone else read it? It was a superspeedy read, and somewhat different to the film. Rafael is kind of different in the book, mainly I think because he's younger and (thus, I guess) is also more innocent. I like both Rafael's myself and think the book version worked well for a book and Johnny's for the film was powerful and perhaps added more complexity to the character, but certainly gave a different take on it as the man isn't just a boy. Both are the same idea though and it's so wrong and tragic. Also, of course, in the book you get more insight into some of the specific things going through this Rafael's mind which was interesting and sad and brave and... so on and so forth. Though, as I've said, to me the film is very powerful at conveying what Rafael is feeling too. I found the novel very interesting, poignant and sad anyway. The end - oh!

Hmm.... also, it made me think a little about symbolism and religion or spirituality in the book and film. For a couple of examples (though there are more): In the book Rafael's feet get torn up when he has to walk barefoot (which I am sure has a religious parallel (?)... or at least is like a kind of pilgrimage kinda thing?) and are bandaged with cloths and he bathes over and over on his final night in a cleansing kind of a way. In the film it's his hand that's pierced sort of like stigmata and again he gets a scene to cleanse himself with his father and be in touch with that spirituality which is only shown in this scene as I recall in the film. Not sure where I'm gong with it, but just saying...

Oh and in case anyone is thinking of reading it and doesn't know, the book lets you know exactly what'll happen to Rafael. Yurrr... And it sure is not nice.

It's a sacrifice.
The ultimate sacrifice.
A swap, a promise.
"I will die so they will live".
Not unlike that other one, long ago.

Only this sacrifice does not forecast the coming of hope or salvation.
It spells the existance and triumph of injustice, evil.
With no way out of it, but that ultimate one ...

That's how I see it.
Maybe it mey seem offending to religious people, I can not entirely oversee that, since I was not brought up religiously, and feeling connected most to Bhuddism, these days.
It's not meant offensive, though.
Just letting my thoughts go over the theme of making sacrifices - and for what.

Aaww, I still haven't seen this movie yet. It doesn't look like I'm ever going to see that on TV, and I still haven't figured out a place to rent it yet. I think I'll have to buy it, but the past taught kinda taught me not to buy a pig in a poke.

DIT buy it! You won't regret it! This movie is absolutly amazing! It's so sad, emotional and happy at the same time. I always cry at the end, because I'm feeling with Rafael and his little family. It's such a strong decision he makes.

But I agree, you have to be in a certain mood, because it makes you think a lot.

oh, fair enough. It doesn't seem like it's "regular" available, though, is it? I mean, not that I'd have a problem with it to get it second-hand. I just bought a second-hand movie last week. (I'm still waiting on it, though ) It's just that I'm wondering. I find it odd that you just can't get certain movies. Only because it's independent or what??

Yeah, I think there is no other way to get this one though.
It's the same like the Libertine, they're just not selling it here in the stores
It just seems to be not profitable...

Aftermath of the merciless way this film was critisized to smithereens in Cannes, I suppose.

I always wondered why the critics battered it to death.
Weak script, they said.
But show me this weaknesses in the script, then?
When you ask to show these alleged weaknesses, you get a stream of prejudices and opinions, but no or hardly any hard facts.

The script seems to be fine to me.
The story unfolds slowly and heavily, but I think this is in perfect harmony with the heavy subject.
The slow pace resembles those depression-evoking Scandinavian movies of the seventies.
It creates the slow but unstoppable drone, with which poverty and its inevitable disasters take place in poor people's lives.
Exactly spot on for the story of Raphael's life.

But yeah - it is a story that makes many people feel uncomfortable - still.
And what was easier than shooting The Brave down?
It was Johnny's debut as a director, and he played the leading role himself.
Like taking a cookie from a baby.

I'm SO annoyed!

I ordered this once from amazon first hand but had to send it back because it had come out of its holder thing in the box and when I tried to watch it it stopped halfway.. which annoyed me

But then I ordered it OVER A MONTH AGO! from the hmv website, and they have, just now, sent me an e-mail saying they've cancelled it on the website therefore cancelled my order.

I just want the bloody movie!

That was the only place I could find it first hand for a resonable price. It used to be like £5 on amazon but it's gone to like £25. This has really pissed me off.

Elise, I had a little peruse on ebay for you and found these - here. Not sure if you use ebay though and I certainly haven't ever bought a film off there so can't vouch for reliability. It's such a shame this is so hard to find now seemingly .

Thanks, yeah I did have a little look earlier but all of the DVD's seem to be Korean or something or from a seller with negative feedback I might just have to save up for an expensive one, I think, or risk one from a different country - Which I've had a bad past with too lol
